When Do You Need a Custom Pallet?

Standard 48x40 pallets work well for most loads, but there are situations where a custom size is the right choice. If your product overhangs the edges of a standard pallet, a larger deck keeps the load stable and reduces the risk of damage in transit.

Heavy or irregularly shaped loads may need a pallet built to a specific weight rating or footprint. Special forklift entry requirements — such as four-way entry or a particular deck height — can also make a custom build necessary. And if you are shipping internationally, a custom pallet built and stamped to ISPM 15 standards ensures your packaging is export-ready.

Skids, Pallets, and Crates — What's the Difference?

A skid has a top deck and stringers but no bottom deck boards. Skids are lighter and less expensive than pallets, and work well for loads that will be stored on the floor rather than racked. Because there is no bottom deck, skids cannot be used in pallet racking systems.

A pallet has both a top and a bottom deck, connected by stringers or blocks. The bottom deck allows the pallet to be stored in racking and provides more stability for stacking. Standard 48x40 pallets are the most common type in North American warehousing.
